An aesthetic dental filling helps restore the natural appearance of a bright smile while also providing good resistance, lots of support, and better compatibility with the area around the operation. For traditional dental fillings, such as amalgam fillings, the process involves losing some of the tooth tissue to allow the amalgam to set properly; This is not seen when dealing with an aesthetic dental filling. Cement fillings are not as resistant to wear and tear as they only cover a certain portion of the tooth, usually the crown rather than the majority, to change the overall appearance.
What is white fill?
A dental restoration called a white dental filling, commonly called a white composite filling, is used to restore a deteriorated or injured tooth. It is made from a resin material that is tooth-colored and matches the color of the tooth perfectly, producing an aesthetically pleasing result. Because of their ability to produce a more natural appearance, white fillings are a popular alternative to traditional silver amalgam fillings.
What is a dental filling?
In restorative dentistry, aesthetic dental fillings are used to restore teeth that have suffered minimal damage or decay. The procedure involves removing the decayed or damaged area of the tooth and filling the gap with a suitable material to restore its integrity and function.
Amalgam (silver) fillings, composite (white) fillings, ceramic fillings, and gold fillings are just a few of the various aesthetic dental filling materials available. Although they are durable and affordable, amalgam fillings may not match the color of the tooth. Composite fillings can be color matched to the tooth, making them a great option for cosmetically pleasing and visible areas.
Indications
Formation of a small or middle-sized carious cavity, with tooth decay degree being up to 50 %.
Restoration of the tooth’s aesthetic properties.
Contraindications
Destruction of over one-third of the tooth crown;
Sub-gingival tooth decay or impossibility to isolate the cavity or the tooth itself from moist;
Bruxism;
Excessive tooth attrition combined with direct occlusion.
Types of tooth fillings (temporary, permanent)
Depending on their purpose, dental fillings can be either temporary or permanent.
Temporary tooth fillings are used to conduct diagnostics and treatment. For instance, the dentist can install a temporary filling to ascertain that the nerve is affected. If after a certain time the patient still experiences pain, then the nerve should be removed. Besides, the doctor can introduce a temporary filling if it is necessary to isolate a medication for a while. After this timeframe is over, the dentist can easily remove the filling and substitute it with a permanent one.
Permanent tooth fillings are designed to restore the anatomical shape of the tooth and its functional abilities. Such fillings are able to serve for many years.
Which components (materials) are used to perform tooth filling?
Filling material gets selected on the basis of how much the tooth is damaged, and where the affected area is localized. The dentist comes up with the best solution individually for each patient.
Permanent tooth fillings in contemporary dentistry can be made of the following materials:
Amalgam. Nowadays the use of various amalgams (alloys of metals with the quicksilver) is close to zero since such filling materials require much time and high qualification of the dentist. Besides, aesthetic properties of amalgams are far from being ideal — a polished filling is rather visible in the mouth. Such fillings are typically installed on grinding teeth. On the other hand, amalgams serve for up to several decades and can be placed in the wet tooth cavity.
Cement-based fillings. There are mineral (phosphate) and polymeric (glass ionomer) cements. Such fillings have low adhesion properties and serve for no more than two years. The main advantage of cement fillings is their low price.
Porcelain fillings are also called “inlays”; they get produced in dental laboratories and then fixed on the tooth. Porcelain fillings are resistant to colour staining and can be selected to mimic the natural shade of the teeth. Porcelain tooth restoration is normally performed on the major part of the tooth surface. The price of such fillings is similar to that of gold fillings.
Composite material. Such materials are a great alternative to cement fillings. They usually contain porcelain. There are several types of composites:
Acrylic composites. A strong and reliable material. One of its disadvantages is high porosity which eventually leads to nerve inflammation and increases the risk of repetitive caries.
Composites based on epoxy resins. This material is more resistant to attrition but has insufficient strength properties and visibly darkens with time.
Light-cured composites. Such material consists of a filling agent and a polymeric substance that grows hard in the presence of the UV rays. Light-cured fillings are highly durable and have good aesthetic properties (the dentist can select a shade that corresponds to the natural colour of the teeth). The disadvantages of such fillings include low adhesion on the edge and shrinkage. Light-cured fillings serve for about 7-8 years.
