Which components (materials) are used to perform tooth filling?

Permanent tooth fillings in contemporary dentistry can be made of the following materials:

Amalgam. Nowadays the use of various amalgams (alloys of metals with the quicksilver) is close to zero since such filling materials require much time and high qualification of the dentist. Besides, aesthetic properties of amalgams are far from being ideal — a polished filling is rather visible in the mouth. Such fillings are typically installed on grinding teeth. Composites based on epoxy resins. This material is more resistant to attrition but has insufficient strength properties and visibly darkens with time.

Light-cured fillings are highly durable and have good aesthetic properties (the dentist can select a shade that corresponds to the natural colour of the teeth). The disadvantages of such fillings include low adhesion on the edge and shrinkage. Light-cured fillings serve for about 7-8 years.
